A fun and unique fact about Mapandan is how it earned its name through aroma. When early settlers arrived, the landscape was entirely covered in wild, fragrant screwpine plants, which locals call pandan. The town’s name literally translates to "a place of many pandan." While the plant is famous across Southeast Asia for its culinary uses, Mapandan's original residents found a brilliant, practical way to use it everyday: they discovered that throwing fresh pandan leaves directly into their clay pots while boiling native rice infused the entire batch with a sweet, aromatic fragrance and a subtle, refreshing flavor. To this day, they celebrate this natural heritage during the Pandan Festival every April, showcasing everything from pandan-infused delicacies to traditional hand-woven pandan mats!

The municipality of Mapandan, a landlocked, third-class town in eastern-central Pangasinan, derives its name from the historical abundance of the fragrant pandan (screwpine) plant that covered the area. Originally part of the neighboring town of Mangaldan and known as Balon Baley ("new town"), it was first declared an independent pueblo in 1887 under Governor General Emilio Bravo. The initial town center was established in the hilly terrain of what is now Barangay Torres, but the remote location and difficult terrain slowed population growth, prompting local leaders—led by the Aquino clan—to relocate the town center to its current, more accessible Poblacion site. Following a severe disease outbreak that forced temporary re-annexation to Mangaldan from 1905 to 1908, Mapandan’s independence was permanently restored in 1909 via Executive Order No. 10. Today, the town is highly regarded for its well-manicured municipal plaza, its award-winning civic cleanliness programs, and its vibrant annual Pandan Festival celebrated every April.
